Expert Ideas for a Healthier Home

A house is one of the most significant needs of people. It is the place where you live and the haven for bonding with family. On the other hand, a house must be maintained to achieve its function well. And that is to keep you from danger and grant you a healthy well-being. 1. Have a regular cleaning

A house must be cleaned thoroughly to avoid pests and bacteria that might infect your whole household. Remove dust, sweep and mop the floor. Do not forget to wash the dishes and the kitchen counter each day. Clean the electric fan or ceiling fan blades at least once a week.

2. Examine wooden walls, floors, doors, and windows for termites

The termites’ attack is terrible and you have to kill them. They could destroy the structure of the house and its wooden elements. This may cause danger. With this, you must examine your wooden walls, doors, windows, jambs, ceilings, floors, and ceiling joists if they are infested with termites. Call the professionals to remove them right away.

3. Replace or repair the damaged door and window screens

Door and window screens often times are damaged. You have to look over them from time to time. And let them fix immediately by replacing or repairing them.

4. Clean the windows

Windows contribute to the beauty of the house. With this, you must regularly clean the windows including its glass and grills. Use a spray cleaner onto the glass and wipe with a microfiber cloth or a newspaper. Do the same with the window frame, sill, and hardware.

5. Checkup the finishes of your walls

You must inspect your interior walls at least once a year. Among the common exterior paint problems that you could notice are paint incompatibility, blistering, mildew, peeling, poor galvanized metal adhesion, and poor alkaline resistance. For the brick finish, check for dirt, moss, and mold, erosion, mortar cracks and mortar deterioration. Meanwhile, check for cracks for concrete cement finish. If you notice any of these problems, you must fix it immediately or call home repair services.

6. Inspect the plumbing fixtures and drainage for leaks or other plumbing problems

Plumbing is one of the common problems in the house and must be taken care of. Check the kitchen sink, lavatory, water closet, showers, and the pipes for any leaks or clogged pipes. This problem may pose a health hazard and must be fixed immediately. It is advisable to call a skilled plumber to repair this problem..

7. Clean the air conditioner

Air conditioners should be serviced every 3 months particularly when used regularly or else they would not function well. Sometimes if left uncleaned, they would be totally damaged.

8. Clean your garbage disposal regularly

Garbage disposal is important too. You must dispose of them properly. And at the same time clean them regularly to avoid bad smell and bacteria that cause sicknesses.

9. Check the toilet bowl cistern for leaks

Toilet bowl cistern sometimes leaks. This is not hygienic and may cause sickness if not repaired. You have to inspect your toilet bowl cistern always.

10. Inspect the ceiling for signs of leaks

If you notice water runs in the ceiling there must be a leak in your roof or in the toilet located on the second floor. You must find the leak right away as this is quite disgusting and might damage your ceiling too. Let it fix by a skilled plumber.

11. Replace worn out wooden flooring or broken tiles

The common problems of wooden flooring are peeling, stains, blemishes, buckling, cupping, and abnormal gaps. Sometimes, there are broken tiles too in the toilets.  In case, you have any of these problems you could replace the wooden flooring or broken tiles. Leaving the problem as it is may devalue your house.

12. Repair or replace loose handles or hinges of doors and cabinets

Another common problem in the house is the loose handles and hinges of doors and cabinets. This is very uncomfortable for you and these elements may not function well. It is recommendable that you find a good repairman to fix them as soon as possible.

13. Inspect the electric wires or coils and sockets

You must check the electric wires and sockets of your appliances particularly the oven if there are splashes of oil, grease, or dirt. Clean the electric coils with a dry and soft cloth from time to time to avoid any damage. The oil or grease on the coils may trigger a fire.

14.  Clean your range hood often

Range hood and its air filter must be cleaned regularly so that smoke will be cleared in your kitchen. You may use a cleaning spray or degreaser to clean the hood. Keep in mind not to spread the cleaner on any electrical components including light bulbs and sockets. For the air filter, put it in a container with a degreasing solution. The grease would then be dissolved. Then, wash it with warm and soapy water. Let it dry and reattach it in your range hood.

15.  Inspect refrigerator coils

Look over your refrigerator coils if it is covered with dust. Clean it so that your refrigerator will run efficiently. You may use the vacuum to clean the coils.

16. Clean the drains

Water flows easily down in a clean drain. You must clean your drains particularly the shower and kitchen sink drain. Pour about ½ cup of baking soda and ½ cup of vinegar into your drains. Let it remain for 10 minutes and pour hot water. No worries of waters trap in your shower or kitchen sink anymore. Taking care and maintaining your house is a must thing to do. It is good for your welfare and well-being.  Besides, the value of your house will escalate too.
