Smart Living

Expert Ideas for a Healthier Home

Utility expenses are soaring higher each month. On the other hand, you could manage and control this by having smart use of utilities.

You could save lots of money if you use your energy and water wisely. To help you slash your utility expenses, we have listed some ways on how you could save up on utility expenses:

1. Convert your lighting to LED or Solar LED lights

Replace your old traditional bulbs with LED lighting or solar LED lights and lamps. LED lights use less heat and energy use. This means that you could save money and reduce your electric bill each month. You could buy a solar lamp and let it charge during the day. Then, use the solar lamp to light your bedroom or any dark space in your home, particularly the patio or main entry at night.

2. Opt for a natural lighting

It is advisable that you turn off any lights in your house during the day and opt for natural lighting. In your living room or bedroom, you could move over your curtain or drapes and let the sun rays light your home during the day. Besides, saving money, you could also enjoy the natural lighting it provides.

3. Unplug the appliances when not in use

Sometimes you forget to unplug some of your appliances such as television, electric fans, or microwave, among others when you are not using them. It is better to unplug the appliances when not in use. This is because you could save around $50 a year when you unplug unused appliances.

4. Do the chores during night time

If you have time to do some household chores using a dishwasher, washing machine, and dryer at night, it could be a better option. This is because some electric retailers in Singapore offer discounts and lower rate fee at night with their peak and off-peak plans. Peak plan is around 7 am to 11 pm and the off-peak plan starts at 11 pm to 7 am. To know the list of electric retailers that offer these plans, you may check out this site.

5. Use cold water for washing clothes

You may use cold water instead of hot water for washing your clothes. With this, you could save around $22 each year on your electric bill.

6. Air dry your clothes

Why not hang dry your clothes instead of using your dryer. You could save more on your energy bill. You may use the dryer only if you need to dry your clothes faster.

7. Put dryer balls in the dryer

It is known that the dryer ball could reduce the drying time and prevent you in using a fabric softener. This could reduce the use of energy and save more money.

8. Use new energy efficient appliances

If your appliances are too old, it’s time to upgrade them by buying new appliances. You may opt for appliances that are energy efficient. With this, you could slash your electric bill each month.

9. Have a programmable thermostat

You must invest in a programmable thermostat that could manage the temperature of your house. If you reduce the temperature of your house by 7 to 10 degrees for eight hours while you are sleeping, you could save around $100 a year.

10. Have an ideal temperature for your fridge and freezer

You must set the temperature of your fridge in between 2 degrees Celsius and 3 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, the ideal temperature for the freezer is around negative 18 degrees Celsius.

11. Lower the temperature of your water heater

You have to lower the temperature of your water heater by not over 120 degrees. This could use less energy and save bucks.

12. Opt for ceiling fans

Turning on your air conditioner the whole day or during warm days could consume lots of energy. Why not invest in ceiling fans, which are more energy efficient than aircon.

13. Put a clean towel in your dryer

Another way to reduce the drying time of your dryer besides using the dryer balls is to put a dry towel in your dryer. If you have 5 loads in a week, you could save about $20 a year.

14. Make your dishwasher run in full load

You must put all your washables in your dishwasher and make sure it runs in a full load to save energy as well as water. In this way, you could decrease your water and energy bill.

15. Have a shorter shower

If you are using a hot water for the shower, it is advisable that you take a shorter shower.  Experts say that if you cut your shower in a minute, you could save around $30 a year and lessen your water bill too.

16. Close the faucet while brushing your teeth

If you are brushing your teeth, close the faucet or get a glass of water. Use this to rinse your teeth after brushing. This could save water as well as save money for the monthly bill.

17. Repair the leaking faucets and pipes

Faucets and water pipes that are damaged result in water leaks. This is such a waste. You must call an experienced plumber to fix them right away to avoid an increase in your water bill.

Yes, it’s possible to reduce your utility bills by just following the above-mentioned tricks. Certainly, you could save money and use it for other purposes. This would make your finances well-managed and could also lighten your concerns.
