Expert Ideas for a Healthier Home

Appliances such as fridge, washing machine, and electric cooker, among others have a life expectancy. Knowing their lifespans could make you decide if you are going to repair or replace them if they break down. The good news is that you could extend their lifespans by taking care of them properly.

If in case, your home appliances break down before they reach their life expectancy, you could bring them to a reliable home repair service. And to give you an idea of how long appliances could last, we have listed the lifespans of the following common appliances. Also, we provide some tips on how you could extend their life expectancy.

1. Fridge (13 years)

You must clean your fridge regularly, particularly its condenser coils, which become dusty in a short period of time. You may use a condenser brush to clean the coil. Meanwhile, you must unplug the fridge first before cleaning the freezer. Use a baking soda solution and wipe the freezer and the inside parts of your fridge. Once done, you must rinse it with water and let the freezer, dry with a towel before plugging it.

2. Gas/ Electric Cooker (13 and 15 years)

The electric cooker could last for 13 years, while the gas cooker has the life expectancy of 15 years. You must both maintain them properly by cleaning them twice a year or regularly if used often times.

For better cleaning, it is advisable that you follow the self-cleaning feature of the manufacturer’s guidelines. But before you clean the electric cooker, you must unplug it first.

You could also clean it by spraying a baking soda solution on the cooker and then wipe it with a washing up liquid to remove all the grease. Once done, wipe it with a vinegar and water solution to remove the germs and to make it shine brightly. Do not remove the cooktop’s knob while cleaning because it might affect the electrical system.

For a new gas cooker, you must buy a new gas line to avoid any gas leaks. You must also inspect your coil’s cooker and socket from time to time if it is covered with grease. You must clean the coils and socket with grease to avoid fire.

3. Cooker Hob/Hood (14 years)

To add years to your cooker hood, you must clean the filter always by removing the grease. You must also inspect the vent for oil to avoid fire. Do not forget to clean the fan blades for dirt and oil. It could keep the motor of the cooker hood from overheating. You may also wash the exposed metal with warm water or ammonia and water solution to remove grease. Then, rinse it with clean water. If in case, you want an intense cleaning or repair of your cooker hob/hood, you may call an efficient home appliance technician.

4. Air Conditioner (15 years)

You must replace or clean the filters regularly of your air conditioner to make it work well. Be sure that your filter is not clogged or dirty to have a regular flow of air. Cleaning your air conditioner, mainly the filter could reduce the energy use by 5% to 15%. At the same time, increases the life expectancy of your unit.

5. Washing Machine (10 years)

You should inspect the hoses of your washing machine always. Check if there are cracks, bulging, and leaks and replace them if you found any of these problems. It is also advisable that you replace the hoses every three to five years.

You must also place the washing machine at least four inches away from the wall to avoid kinking of the hoses. To make your unit run efficiently you must clean the lint filter regularly. Moreover, clean the washing machine with a baking soda solution or a vinegar and hot water solution.

To top it all, do not put an excess number of clothes other than the required. It must have the appropriate water for the load too. Put a small number of heavy clothes in the unit because these are tough for the machine. In case, your washing machine does not run anymore; you must call an experienced home appliance technician right away to fix the problem.

6. Clothes Dryer (13 years)

Do not overload the clothes dryer with too much number of clothes. Place the required number of clothes so it will run efficiently. Put the dryer on a balance platform or else it will move or shake when in use and will affect its machine.

You have to clean your dryer inside and outside each month using a soapy water. Do not forget to unplug it before cleaning. Also, clean the lint trap with a dryer lint brush. The lint screen must also be cleaned with a fabric softener sheet. For the vent system, get the help of home appliance repair service for cleaning it at least twice a year.

7. Microwave (9 years)

You must avoid putting any unmicrowavable safe such as metal, dishwasher with silver or gold accents and aluminum foil inside your microwaves. These could cause explosions and entirely damage your microwave.

Also, you must clean the microwave regularly and remove the grease inside and outside of your microwave. Do not slam its door to avoid damage. And do not overload it with many stuff other than the required. Unplug your microwave when not in use, particularly if there are flashes of lightning, downed power lines, and grid switching, which are very damaging for microwaves.

8. Water Heater (15 years)

You must flush the tank of your water heater and check the anode rod for rust at least once a year. This could help in expanding its longevity. You may also add insulation, which could lessen the heat loss by 45% and save energy use by 9 percent.

You could save a lot of money if your home appliances reach its expected lifespan. You could extend their life expectancy too. Of course, if you maintain and take care of them always. No need to worry,  follow the tips mentioned above above and your appliances will expand its lifespan.
