Expert Ideas for a Healthier Home

Kitchens, being the most utilised place in a house, can easily become a breeding ground for bacteria. This often starts with the unusual sanitation habit that we have inside the kitchen. We prepare food every day.  We use kitchen tools and appliances a lot. These tools need good sanitation habits above all. Because this is where the health and nutrition of the family or every household begins.

It might be a very bulky workload to start with, but it is a must. Some mothers say that the kitchen is their least favorite when it comes to cleaning. There are a lot of gadgets, a lot of considerations, a whole lot of work. This often leads to a poorly maintained and sanitised kitchen. Where it also starts a lot of different bacterial diseases among family members.  So worry no more as we share some ideas on how to sanitise your kitchen tools and appliances.

1. Begin with segregation

To properly sanitise your kitchen tools and appliances, you should start grouping them in. Before taking that soap or any antibacterial cleaning solution, consider grouping them.  There is a lot of grouping variation among kitchen appliances that you may follow.

Segregation could be done in the following ways:

  • According to use or function.

By following this grouping method, you are more able to isolate the items from contaminating one from another. Imagine isolating those chopping items like the knives, chopping boards, and kitchen scissors when cleaning. It makes you sure that the elements and bacteria gathered from their usage is not being mixed up with some other tools like the spoon and fork. Most of the time when we slice meat and other kitchen ingredients, the first thing that comes in contact with them are the slicing materials. See the difference.

Do not mix them up when you are cleaning.

  • According to their built. (is it made of plastic, tin, aluminum, stainless steel etc.)

The second segregation group is depending on what they are made of.  Knowing the built of these appliances and gadgets will guide you in what cleaning/sanitation material should you use. Because just like human sickness, each has its designated medicine. For an example, the cleaning materials you use for stainless steel appliances or gadget should not be the same as what you use for porcelain and plastics. Sanitizing is not a fit for all task.

  • According to their size.

Yes, size matters! Segregating your kitchen appliances according to their size does not only ensures a clean environment. It also saves you a lot of time. This lessens the nuisance of not finishing the tasks that you have started.  It also makes the sanitation more efficient since you get to finish things well rather than just binging on cleaning some of these appliances and gadgets.

Once you have decided on how you should group them, you can now easily start to sanitise them. As it won’t take you a lot of time jumping from one appliance to another.

2. Think of using proper storage ideas

Using a proper storage idea does not only make your kitchen organised. It also takes your appliances away from pests and other bacteria that might be hiding beneath your kitchen surfaces.  It is always a good practice for you to keep them properly on designated places.

3. Start cleaning them properly.

Once you have segregated and organised your kitchen tools, you can now start the sanitation.

  • For toaster and ovens

It is a good start to always empty the tray. Right after keeping out those materials you can now remove the tray and let them sit in a warm soapy water to take away the charred food.  It also helps to use baking soda to properly disinfect it and take away any germs and bacteria.

  • Pots, casseroles, and pans

To properly sanitise these kitchen tools, you should start by using an antibacterial dishwasher. This is a very good practice as some ingredients that we use for cooking leaves some traces of germ and bacteria such as E-coli, salmonella and such. If you can’t find any of these antibacterial dishwashing liquids, you can resort to natural ideas like, adding vinegar into your regular soap, or even by adding drops of lemon or any citrus fruit. These agents are very rich in antibacterial and disinfecting properties because of their acidic concentrations.

Cooker hobs or stoves are the number one victims of kitchen mishaps. starting from the cooking splatters and even charred particles. To properly sanitise these, always make sure to use a strong soap or cleaning liquid to get rid of dirt and germs. It also helps to scrub not only the surface but even the grids. You should remove any detachable parts of the cooker hob for you to clean them separately. As it will just mix up the dirt to some other parts of the cooker hob.

In sanitising the fridge a good hack is to add some bits of coal inside it. This acts as a natural deodoriser and antibacterial agent inside the fridge. By following this way, you don’t only keep the insides of your fridge smelling fresh, you also assure that the things inside your fridge are free from any bacteria and viruses.

  • Spoon, fork, knives and other small kitchen utensils.

In order for you to make sure that your eating habit is free from germs, boil these kitchen utensils in water + baking soda solution at least once a week.  This practice does not only keep them away from any bacteria. It also leaves your utensils good looking because baking soda is a good agent on making your silverwares polished and shiny.

4. Proper drying

Cleaning and sanitising will always involve liquids. And liquids or any moisture is a good breeding ground for these viruses and bacteria.  So right after cleaning be sure to pat dry all of your kitchen utensils to keep them away from moisture. It is also helpful to keep them exposed in the air to take away any of those wet areas.  One good hack to keep these appliances and gadgets dry is by adding a layer of desiccant into your cupboards and storing drawers covered by either a paper towel or even any fabric. This element is known for its good absorption of any forms of liquids.

There are many other ways on how to assure that our kitchen is away from any viral and bacterial attacks.  But following all of these basics that we have shared will surely cut off a lot of time that you have to spend on kitchen sanitization.  These are just the basics, but surely helps so much! Start your kitchen sanitation never like before.
