With the unstoppable modernisation of life, our homes should never be left out in the dark. There are so many ways on how to cope up with these kitchen developments.

Always remember that the kitchen is the heart of every home.  This holds a special place where the family spends most of their time together!  It is also a great place to entertain guests.  We know that the aesthetics of the kitchen is important, but its function holds a higher place. Check out this article to find some ways on how to design an efficient kitchen! Believe it or not, an efficient kitchen will help you a lot with your efficiency!

Before we go on further with the design tips, here are some advantages of an efficient kitchen:

  1.  It makes cooking more enjoyable.
  2. When you design an efficient kitchen, it saves you a lot of time being spent in the kitchen.
  3.  You can save some cash on your electric bill due to efficiency.
  4. Your kitchen appliances can last longer.
  5. And many others!

 1. Know the Kitchen’s Work Triangle

To design an efficient kitchen, knowing what the “Work Triangle” is the most fundamental knowledge. The work triangle is the most common footwork being done while using the kitchen. This principle is not only used at homes but also in the food businesses. It says that there are three main components that are mostly used inside the kitchen. These are:

  • The Fridge – where the ingredients or foods are being stored and kept.
  • Sink and wash area – a place where the foods and utensils are washed and cleaned.
  • Stove or oven – where the whole process of cooking takes place.

Knowing these three main components of the kitchen, you should be able to visualise how these items should be placed and drawn in the floor plan. The fridge, the sink, and the stove should have a triangular layout. This principle ideally suggests that you should be able to walk from your fridge to your sink, up to your stove in a seamless path. There should be no distractions or obstacles along the way.

2. Do you need a kitchen island?

Having a kitchen island is one great way on how to design an efficient kitchen. But do you know that this principle is not applicable to all types of kitchens? Having a smaller kitchen does not really need placement of kitchen island.  It just uses up a big amount of space that should be clear for maximum efficiency while inside the kitchen. But don’t worry, even if your kitchen is just small, you can still create some movable islands by placing wheeled-tables that could be moved when you are not in the kitchen.

In larger kitchens, the island can cut down excessive travels from one side of the kitchen triangle to another.  So if you are planning to renovate or just on the initial planning of your kitchen, consider the functions of a kitchen island!

3. Place your cabinets in the right places.

In every kitchen, adding some cabinets should be essential. One great way on how to design an efficient kitchen is by placing perfectly-sized cabinets in the right location. The cabinets should be placed for functionality and efficiency more than just the aesthetics. You might want to place your ingredients cabinet nearer to the cooker hob so that you won’t be running back and forth while cooking your family’s favorite dinner. Apart from placing it smartly, you should also consider the convenience and reachability of these cabinets. It should be placed in convenient heights so that all capable members of the family for cooking can easily reach these cabinets. Good cabinets, when placed in the right locations can help you achieve kitchen efficiency!

4. Design your kitchen appliance layout properly.

Zoning out the kitchen appliances is another great way to add to ways on how to design the kitchen efficiently. Zoning means knowing what appliances should be placed together for efficiency and longevity. Appliances should be grouped together depending on their functions and capabilities. This practice will not only make the kitchen run efficiently but also help you get out to appliance damages in the long run.  All items that go together should be grouped together. In the most simple concept, you should never place a fridge beside a cooking appliance such as a cooker hob, oven or even a microwave. Placing a cooling appliance besides a warm appliance can cause some troubles with its functions. Thus, resulting in damage, and an inefficient function. So to get away with appliance damages and inefficiency, you should know how to zone out appliances as well.

And there you have it! By checking out these simple principles and tips, you can now jumpstart on how to have your kitchen floor plan layout.
