Expert Ideas for a Healthier Home

Clogged drain brings a big headache to any homeowner. It makes a very big problem and a tedious amount of work that hinders us from accomplishing basic household tasks such as washing the dishes, preparing food, or proper water sewage movement from our sinks even down to our baths.  This makes it a lot harder when you live with your family inside the house. A lot of things will surely get compromised. An average lifespan of a clear drain on both sink and in the bath is 3-5 years. This tells us that our drains could run this long smoothly and without any problems.

This is actually something debatable because it can even last longer just depending on the ways how we use them.  Sometimes the responsibility is not on our sinks and drains alone. But it also boils down to us.  We should be more responsible when it comes to using the drain.  There are a lot of factors on how to have our drains properly working. We can do this by having it maintained regularly by experts. But right now, we know that you are trying to look for a quick fix. Check out as we share  first aid tips on how to fix a clogged drain.

Home Chemical Remedies:

Just right inside our homes, in the kitchen to be specific, you can actually find good chemicals to help us aid this problem. These are sometimes subtle chemicals which are away from hazardous effects or poisoning. These are also more economical when it comes to the price compared to the premixed ones we buy in the supermarket.

1. Baking Soda and Vinegar

No One could ever go wrong with baking soda! The number one savior among our household problems are these two chemicals we find in the kitchen. Science tells us that the acidic content of the vinegar +  the basic abilities of the baking soda could totally eliminate and corrode all organic things they come to pass through. Having these two combined results in a chemical reaction that will unclog your drains.  To start, you should remove all visible debris on your drain opening.  Pour up to 100 grams of dry baking soda down your drain. Then immediately pour half  a cup of vinegar to start the chemical reaction. If you can see bubbles forming, it is now the time to cover the drain with a rag or drain plug. Leave this for 30 minutes to let it corrode the clogging materials.

Once done, you can now remove the plug, and run a hot boiling water into the drain to make sure that everything is flushed out.

2. Dishwashing Liquid and Boiling Water

One of the agents causing drain clogging especially with kitchen sink drains are solidified grease and oils. If this is the case, a dishwashing liquid and boiling water is a good DIY fix. The process starts by squirting a good amount a generous amount of dishwashing liquid down the drain. The dishwashing liquid formula should be a concentrate for it to have the full abilities to ungrease the pipes. Once the process is done, quickly follow it by pouring 1 kettle of a boiling water as a reinforcement. This will surely take away all of the clogs in the drain. Once the drain has been cleared, it is helpful to do this at least once a week. You can also get some help with plumbing professionals to help you install a grease trap within your kitchen drain system.

3. Salt, Baking Soda and Warm Water

One good way of clearing drain clogs is using the salt, baking soda and warm water combination. You can start this by mixing 1:1:1 portions of each element. Mix half cup of salt to a half cup of baking soda to a half cup of water. This paste will act as a pushing agent for the drain clogs especially food leftover and hairs. Once you have produced the paste, you can just easily pour it down the drain and leave it there for 20-30 mins. Longer stay duration of the paste to the pipe, the better result you’ll yield. It works like a miracle. The salt and baking soda will break down hair and food leftovers. This makes it an all-in-one solution for both kitchen sink and bathroom drain.

After 30 mins or longer, you can follow a pour of boiling water to loosen up the broken down particles even further.  This is a sure fix to your clogged drain.

Physical Remedies

Sometimes tough clogs are not even solved by chemical means.  This boils down to the fact that we need to exert more pressure to the problem! Literally! There are so many available low-tech devices that we can use to solve the clogged drain problems.

1. Hand Drain Snake

This might sound unusual, but yes, hand drain snake exists. This is a very special device that is designed specifically for clearing out tubes in all forms and angles. It is made up of clawed wired which will act as pushing or pulling factor for our clogged pipes. All you have to do is to push the drain snake down into our pipes until you have reached the end.  It has a round hand handle which will help you push and pull the wire easily.  It acts as the mechanism of a fishing rod, the lever will adjust the length of the wire for maximum use.

Once you have reached the end of the pipe, there is a one-press button that will increase the diameter of the wire. The increased diameter will help you pull out all of the accumulated and built-up residues causing the clogs.

2. Plungers and Water

We have known the mighty plunger clears clogged drain ever since! It has been our classic helping hand when it comes to clearing clogs of all forms.  Which makes it a reason that every household should have some plungers. This easy to use aid just needs the help of water to clear out drain and sink clogs. All you have to do is to fill the sink with water, then start pushing the plunger at least 3 pushes per second. This will help the water to push out all of the residues causing the clog.  But be careful in doing such because these days, experts would say that a plunger is not a good help as it is only good for one-time use.  Because if you do this process every time the drain is clogged, you are accumulating all of the residues at the bottom of the pipe causing a bigger and more expensive problem in the future!

Plumbing Experts

Most of the time, if the drain has not been properly maintained in a very long time, the blockage becomes hard to remove. This clogged drain is caused by impacted dirt that has been solidified over time. This problem is something we have to consult with experts. Call in a plumbing expert which could totally eliminate those blockages and even offer you better solutions on how to properly maintain your drains.

Preventive Measures

See! There’s a lot of good and inexpensive ways of clearing out drain clogs. Just be more resourceful then the problem is done.  But right after clearing the problem, there are also some more preventive ways which we can do to get away from this problem.  Simple solutions and preventive measures could be followed :

  • Soda: Once there are some leftover sodas, you can just pour them down to the drain. Since it is acidic, it has an antiseptic and corroding ability to pipe residue build-up. It can also make stainless sink shinier over time!
  • Installing Stocking Bags:  To further prevent small particles such as chalk, hair, and other tiny particles from clogging our drains, you can cut out leg stocking which could be attached to your drain openings. It serves as a good filter on spacing out the mentioned clogging agents.
  • Responsible usage: This one is basic! It starts with your own personal responsibility to at least remove all leftovers from food before even putting them directly to the sink.  This simple preventive measure will surely assure you that none of the clogging problems will arise in the future!

If none of these First-aid tips work, then that’s the time to ask for help. There are so many home maintenance and plumbing professionals which could give you the best remedies and solutions! These might be aiding you a quick remedy, it is still advisable to look for long term solutions and total fixes!
