What should you do if your appliances were damaged by water? It can be because of flood, or a storm, or you just accidentally spilled coffee. Do you need to immediately replace it? Or is there a way to salvage your things? The simple answer is, it depends on how grave the damage is. But if such an unfortunate event happens to you, here are some first aid tips you can do for water damaged appliance.

Don’t Use It – AT ALL!

If any of your appliances was affected by water,in no case should you use it. In fact, the best thing to do is to unplug these right away. But in case of flood and your appliances are still plugged in, you might as well let it be to avoid getting electrocuted.

Remember, it doesn’t matter if you are skilled to repair items. Always refer to a professional and leave your damaged item as it is for now. You might not realize it but your appliances might have faulty wiring and gas line. If you turn these on, it can be dangerous to the entire family.

Evaluate What Happened

It is crucial to identify what exactly happened to your item. Check how long it was submerged in water and take note of visible damages.

Look for the Warranty

Before you ask for a third-party repair services, check for the warranty first. This should save you money if ever your appliance is still covered. Contact them immediately and bring your appliance to the nearest service center. Or perhaps, ask a representative to visit your home.

Call an Expert to Evaluate Your Appliances

In case your appliance is already not covered by warranty, look for a reliable home service company that can evaluate your item

Now, if you are having troubles identifying if your appliances should be repaired or replaced, here are few questions to consider.

How old is the appliance?

If it is considered ‘old’ and ‘ancient’, you might want to have it replaced. New appliances are made to be more efficient and they consume lesser electricity after all.

How much do you need to have it repaired?

Ask the professionals on how much you need to spend for repairs. If it turns out to be almost the same with a brand new item, then choose this option. At least it is safer and it will be under a new warranty.

Is still safe?

If it can be repaired, do you think it is still safe to use after quite some time? There’s nothing wrong with reviving old items. But if it is going to pose a threat, you might want to just dispose it.

Generally, there are few appliances that can be redeemed depending on the damage that has been done. These are:

But for other items that has been damaged by water, more often than not, experts will recommend that you replace it. Here are some examples:

The bottom line here, SAFETY FIRST. Even if you think you know how to repair appliances, if you do not have the license or the extensive knowledge, leave it to professionals. Do not risk having more damages at home.
