Most people would like to have pets in their homes. What if you are living in an HDB flat, are you allowed to take pets with you?
The good news is you can have pets in your HDB flats provided that you follow some restrictions. Below are some of the things you should know before having pets in your HDB:
1. Dog lovers
You may enjoy a company of a dog pet in your home. However, HDB regulation states that you can only keep one dog among any of the following breeds:
Affenpinscher, Australian Silky Terrier, Australian Terrier, Bichon Frise, Bohemian Terrier, Bolognese, Brussels, Bichon Javanese, Border Terrier, Boston Terrier, Cairn Terrier, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Chihuahua, Chinese Crested Dog, Chinese Imperial Chin, Chinese Temple Dog, Coton de Tulear, Czech Terrier, Dachshund, Dandie Dinmont, English Toy Spaniel, Griffon Belge, German Hunting, Griffon Brabancon, Hairless Dog. Italian Greyhound, Jack Russell Terrier, Japanese Spaniel, Japanese Spitz, Lhasa Apso, Little Lion Dog, Lakeland Terrier, Maltese, Manchester Terrier, Miniature Pinscher, Miniature Schnauzer, Norfolk Terrier, Norwich Terrier, Papillon, Pekinese, Pomeranian, Poodle, Pug, Schipperke, Scottish Terrier, Sealyham Terrier, Shetland Sheepdog, Shih Tzu, Silky Terrier, Small Continental Spaniel, Small English Terrier, Small Spitz, Smooth Fox Terrier, Toy Fox Terrier, Toy Terrier, Tibetan Spaniel, Volpino Italiano, West Highland Terrier, Wire-Haired Fox Terrier, Welsh Terrier, and Yorkshire Terrier.
Most of these breeds are smaller-sized dogs. But, it is better instead of not having a dog pet inside your home.
2. No cats allowed
Unfortunately, no cats are allowed in HDB flats. This is because cats are difficult to manage in the flats. Usually, they make caterwauling sounds that can make the neighbours uncomfortable. Also, they defecate and urinate in public areas.
3. Other pets allowed
There are some pets that do not make any noise or other inconvenience like the cats. Among these pets that are allowed in HDB flats include fish, rabbits, birds, and hamsters. On the other hand, make sure that you do not buy an illegally-imported or sold an animal. Sometimes police conduct raids for illegal exotic pets.
4. Take care of your pets
To avoid any inconvenience to your neighbours, you have to take care of your pets properly. You have to maintain cleanliness in your home by properly disposing of your pet defecation. You must also bathe your pet regularly to avoid bad odor that your neighbor may smell. Also, clean your pet’s shelter regularly. In case, your pet has lice, you have to treat it right away to avoid spreading to your neighbour’s flat. Make sure that you always keep your pets safe inside your flat. These things can make your neighbours appreciate your pets.
5. Pet licensing
If you have a dog pet that is not listed among the approved breeds provided above, you should get a license from the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA).
Pets can benefit you emotionally and mentally. You can have a pet beside you in your HDB flat provided that you comply with the above regulations and be a responsible owner. Indeed, you will not only enjoy their company but also your HDB neighbours.
