Expert Ideas for a Healthier Home

Keeping up with a smelly drain inside a kitchen is a whole lot of tasks to do. Drain surely sits in, inside the kitchen.  It is where we usually clean up the mess of kitchen preparations and rubbishes. This could be from the plate scrapings, food leftovers and even some of the remaining kitchen cutouts.  One of the most common problems that every household encounters are the smelly drains! This problem serves as a top kitchen nightmare that mothers and housekeepers experience at one point in their lives.

Worry no more, as we are here to help you get out of this stinking problem in the kitchen.  Check out as we share some very easy DIY fixes for a smelly drain.

1. Hot Water

Often times, the leading factor of stinking drains are built-up food residue. Over time, as we wash dishes or even other materials from the kitchen, there will always be some leftovers we can’t strain. This is now pushed down to our sink pipes and gets stuck somewhere over its bending point. And as the time goes by, by repetitive actions, this will create a built-up residue, which will cause the sink to stink. the number one best and easiest fix is by using a hot water.  All you have to do is to boil a liter of hot water, infused with 250 ml vinegar.  Once the water boils, you can actually add the vinegar then pour it right away to the sink.

The vinegar has an acidic element that could help corrode the built-up residue, and even reinforced by the hot temperature from the water. This DIY tip will loosen up the stinking group and makes it easier for these pollutants to be flushed away from the drain.

2. Citrus Fruits

The natural wonders of nature don’t stop with aiding our health. They also help us aid some kitchen problems including the stinking drain. The next time you experience thus stinking drain problem, all you have to do is to grab your citrus fruits.  Lemons, limes, oranges, and other could be the solution. All you have to do is to put the whole fruit in a food processor, or juicer. Once the process has been done, you can now, add at on a liter of water and use it as a drain.  Pour over the solution to the drain, and let it sit, for 30-45 minutes before using. This process will be refreshing and deodorising the pipes with the natural acids found from these fruits.

You can also make natural cleaning and deodorising spray by doing the same method. Fruits in the juicer, strain the pulps, put it in a spray bottle, and add some water.  Voila! That is your instant, all-natural deodorising and cleaning spray anywhere in the house!

3. Baking Soda, Lemon and Water

If there will be a top cleaning agent award, it will surely go out to the wonderful baking soda! Baking soda has been known to be a very good agent when it comes to deodorising, unclogging, cleaning and even polishing most of our household items. The drain or the sink is no exception to this! All you have to do is to mix two tablespoons of baking soda to 250 ml of water and a squeeze of lemon into a bottle.  You can use this solution as a quick DIY fix to a smelly drain. The lemon and the baking soda makes a perfect tandem to deodorise and unclog drains with their corroding abilities.  Pour down the baking soda + water + lemon solution in the drain and let it sit for 30 mins before totally flushing it out with another liter of water.

It is very important for you to let the solution set into the drain pipe for 30 mins. During this time, the solution is corroding the stinking built up into the pipes. Don’t flush it or use the drain right away. The longer the time it sits, the better the result will be.

4. Ice and Salt

Ice and salt might lead you to a question mark up into your mind. But yes, these two household staples also make a good deodorising agent into your smelly drain.  For you to be able to attain a good result in using the ice and the salt technique, you have to remove traps from your drain. If you don’t know how to, you can call a plumbing expert to help you out with this. To start the deodorising process using ice + salt procedure, all you have to do is to prepare your ice cubes to be small enough to fit into your drain mouth.  Once the sizes are good enough, you can now pour a generous amount of salt into it.  Once the two have been perfectly mixed up, you can now drop the icicles into your drain.

The hard ice will act as a blade, like that of a blender, while the salt acts as a preserving agent for the hardness of the ice.  It is more likely to regard this process as a mechanical procedure than that of a chemical.  The ice will scrape off all of the residues including grease, while the salt also makes a good stench neutraliser. This step will neutralise the odor of your smelly drain.

5. Coffee and Charcoal for a smelly drain

A combination of the coffee and charcoal might sound unusual, but surely this tandem will amaze you! It will help you solve the mystery of a smelly drain. All you have to do is to use your coffee grounds or even instant coffee powder plus a pulverised charcoal. You have to prepare equal amounts of each to make this DIY solution successful! Mix 5 tablespoons of coffee to 5 tablespoons of charcoal. Once you have mixed these agents thoroughly, you can now put it into a used leg stocking, then hang it into the place where your stinking drain is located. The coffee and charcoal are known agents which are very good smell absorbers. They can absorb the strong smell from our drain stench while leaving that very good empowering aroma from the coffee.

This tandem is a good temporary fix until a professional plumber is there for help. It is not only useful for drains, but you can also use this inside the fridge,  into the bathroom and even everywhere in the house to keep a pleasant smell into the house at all times.

For sure, there are a lot of other different ways on how to solve your smelly drain problems. But the best ones start within our kitchen practices. Because no matter how much chemicals or knowledge you know into fixing the problem, if you are not having a good kitchen practice, then it will be hard for this one to stop.  You should always be more responsible when it comes to the sink and drain usage. Be sure to scrape all of the food or any residues from out eating utensils before stacking them into the drain.  This little way will keep the stress of stinking drain away! A little ounce of prevention worth it than a pound of cure!
