Expert Ideas for a Healthier Home

Home is where you and your family should be the most secured. To maintain a virus-free home, you should know how to properly clean it with the right cleaning materials. This simple step could lessen the chance of anyone in the family from getting sick or obtaining some fatal virus like the 2019 Novel-Coronavirus.  With the supply hoarding and lack of supplies happening around the market, it is also helpful to create some effective alternatives with the materials you have around at home.

1. Vinegar, Lemon, Water for Dinifecting Glass and Ceramic Surfaces


– 1 medium-size lemon

– 250 ml. of vinegar

– 1 Liter Warm water

How to prepare: 

  1. Place the sliced lemons in a jar of the 250ml. vinegar.
  2. Let the solution sit for 2-3 weeks for the best chemical reaction
  3. Combine the vinegar + lemon solution with an equal amount of warm water in a spray bottle.
  4. It is now ready to use.

This disinfectant solution will work perfectly on ceramic surfaces. If you have marble tables, glass cooker hobs,  and others, the lemon and vinegar will surely fight off the germs and bacteria that sit on these surfaces. Aside from keeping your homewares free from bacteria and viruses, it also maintains the shine on the glass or ceramic surfaces. It also helps in sanitising your kitchen materials especially the ones you use for cooking.  You can also add this solution to your usual dishwashing liquid to keep it more powerful in fighting off viruses and bacteria which could be harmful to your family’s health.  You can also use this solution to clean up floors, tiles, and even your bathroom sink and bowls.



2. High-Proof Vodka, Distilled Vinegar for metal and brass materials


– 1/2 cup high-proof (70 and above) vodka

– 1/2 cup distilled vinegar

– 1 cup water

  • essential oil for added scent  (optional)

How to prepare: 

  1. Mix the 1/2 cup of high-proof vodka + 1/2 cup of the distilled vinegar in a spray bottle
  2. Shake the spray bottle for 30 seconds to activate some chemical reactions between the two liquids
  3. You may add some drops of your essential or aroma oils to add some scent for your cleaner
  4. Put a cup of water in a separate spray bottle that will be used as a rinser after using the vodka + vinegar solution

Metals works like doorknobs, faucet handles, spoon and forks, knives and many others require strong disinfectants. To keep your metal things disinfected and free from harmful bacteria, a strong vodka + vinegar could be helpful. With the known high-alcohol content of vodka, it can kill germs that could be ingested or taken inside our bodies. While the acid content of the vinegar will help out in retaining the polish and look of your metal handles and homewares at home.  Just make sure to rinse the vodka + vinegar solution after use to prevent the metal works from rusting.  You can also use this solution to clean metal appliance surfaces such as the fridge, microwave and ovens.


3. Hydrogen Peroxide and Lemon Peels for Linens and Fabrics


– 50 ml of Hydrogen Peroxide

– 10 grams of Lemon Peel

– 1 cup water

  • essential oil for added scent  (optional)

How to prepare: 

  1. Put in the 10 grams of lemon peel within the 50 ml hydrogen peroxide and 1 cup of warm water
  2. Let the solution sit for atleast 24 hours.
  3. You may add some drops of your essential or aroma oils to add some scent for your cleaner
  4. Shake the spray bottle before using it to activate the solution.

Linens and fabrics are one of the most absorbent materials for viruses and germs. Keeping a spray bottle of the lemon peel + hydrogen peroxide and water will keep you up in fighting with these germs. Hydrogen peroxide is one of the most powerful disinfectants. Adding some lemon zest into it will help you freshen out the fabrics. You can spray this solution to your sofas, throw pillows, and even your curtains to make sure that viruses and bacteria are killed once they landed on its surfaces.

Apart from that, you may also keep your fabrics into the sunlight as warm temperatures are proven to kill some types of viruses such as the coronavirus. You may also add this solution into your laundry to make sure that the clothes you wear are free from diseases.You can also use this gentle cleaner to both soft and hard toys that your kids play around with inside the house.

With all of these home-made disinfectants, you could get while inside the house, you are now ready to be more confident and have lesser worries while at home. The real battle starts while staying outside. It may be as important as guarding mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic.
