Expert Ideas for a Healthier Home

Baking soda is also called sodium carbonate that has leavening properties and widely used in baking. It is not only used in baking and cooking other dishes.

Baking soda has various household uses and it is found to be efficient in cleaning. To give you some ideas on how baking soda is utilised at home, we have listed the following ways in which baking soda could be of help in your home:

1. Removes stains on pots and pans

Pots and pans may leave roasted particles and baked food on them, which are difficult to remove. To remedy this problem, you may mix a solution of 1 cup of hot water, 1/3 cup vinegar, and baking soda. Then, sprinkle the solution on the surfaces of pots and pans and wipe them. This solution will effectively remove the stains on the pots and pans. You can also use this solution in cleaning nonstick pans, in which it could absorb the odour of the food you cook.

2. Freshens the smell of refrigerator

Most of the times the smell of fish such as salmon or tuna, among others can leave a foul smell inside the refrigerator. To refresh your foul-smelling fridge, spread a baking soda on the baking sheet and place it inside. The baking soda will absorb the foul smell or strong odours of food. Also, it can remove stains inside your refrigerator.

3. Refreshes and unclogs drains

Put a baking soda in a hot water and try to pour it into your drains. This process will refresh your drains by absorbing the bad smell in your drains. It will also help in unclogging your drain.

4. Cleans and deodorises microwave

The baking soda can clean and kill the bad smell inside your microwave by just putting two tablespoons of it and a cup of water in a microwave safe bowl. Then, cook it for 2 to 3 minutes. Once done, you may leave it for a few minutes for condensation and wipe the inside of your microwave using a clean damp cloth. You will notice how clean and refresh your microwave.

5. Get rids of stains on electric/gas cooker

Make a baking soda paste by putting ½ cup of baking soda and 3 tablespoons of water in a bowl. Spread the paste on the interior of the cooker, but do not apply the paste on the heating components. Leave the paste overnight or for 12 hours. Once done, wipe the cooker with a wet clean cloth. Spray vinegar on the corners of the cooker and wipe them again. The particles of food and stains in your cooker will be removed afterward.

6. Clears away stains from plastic food containers

Most plastic containers leave stains or grease that comes from leftover food. To remove them you may sprinkle a baking soda on the surfaces of the plastic container and wipe it with a clean sponge. For stains that are difficult to remove, you make a solution by adding 4 tablespoons and a quart of water and spread the solution on the stains. This thing will work and remove the toughest stains on the plastic containers.

7. Freshens and brightens clothing

Baking soda can freshen and brighten the clothing by adding them to your laundry in a washing machine. It can also be a good fabric softener and can clean your washing machine too.

8. Removes odors from trash

Sprinkle a baking soda in the bottom of your garbage bin and this will remove the bad odour in it. You can also clean your garbage bin and scrub it with the powder. And to make your trash smells good, you may put the peels of citrus fruits such as orange and lemon.

9. Eliminates the bad smell of sponges

Kitchen staples such as sponges will be smelly in time. To take out this bad smell from the sponges, you may soak them in baking soda and water. This will refresh your sponges and may use them again rather than throw them away.

10. Gets rid of fungus from the bathroom

The bathroom is sometimes filled with mildew that you need to sanitise it. To remove fungus in your bathroom you just scrub it including the lavatory, water closet, tiles, flush tank, bathtub and even your shower curtain with the soda powder using a wet sponge.

11. Takes out crayons on walls

Probably, your kid scribbles on your walls using crayons. No worries, you may take out the crayons on the walls by using baking soda. Sprinkle the powder on a damp cloth and wipe the crayon-covered walls.

12. Cleans kitchen surfaces

Baking soda with water can clean kitchen surfaces. These include stainless steel sinks, countertops, cooker hood, and even cooking utensils.
